A Guide to Caring for Your Carpets, Curtains
and Upholstery
Just
as the clothes we wear need regular cleaning to keep them at
their best and make them last longer, so carpets, curtains,
and upholstery, require a regular care programme. Regular and
periodic cleaning will keep them looking good and extend their
life-span.
Make sure your furnishings look their best by following these
simple guidelines.
1. Prevention
Prevention is better than cure! Ensure you have good
entrance matting to trap as much soil as possible and prevent
it getting carried through the building. Encourage everyone
to use the mats, and clean the mats regularly to maintain
their maximum efficiency.
2. Regular Vacuuming
Regular
vacuuming is the surest way to keep carpets looking their
best. Upholstery should also be vacuumed regularly using
the appropriate attachment. Vacuum cleaners with a suction
plus
rotating beater-bar action (usually 'upright' cleaners) are
more effective in bringing dirt to the surface for easy
removal
on most carpets. For very deep pile it is preferable to use
plain suction vacuuming. See our Sebo
Vacuums.
3. Stain and Spill Removal
Accidents will happen and carpets and fabrics will
stay looking their best if prompt action is taken.
For best results follow these simple steps:
- Act immediately before the spill or stain spreads too
far or penetrates the fibres.
- Scrape up solids with a spoon or palette knife, always
working towards the centre of the spillage to avoid spreading
it.
- Blot up Liquids with a clean white cloth or paper towel.
If
a stain remains take great care! Many stain removal guides
give a long list of products to use in different situations;
detergent and vinegar; alcohol; benzine; acetate; dry cleaning
solvent etc. Beware! Wrongly used, you could end up doing
more harm than good and leave a permanent stain which even
a professional may have difficulty in removing. Plain water
is the universal solvent which will work on most things.
By
using clean warm water, a clean muslin-type cloth and gently
dampening and blotting the stain with patience and care,
you
will work most things out. Alternatively you can use a Chem-Dry
Stain Extinguisher, as directed, knowing that it is safe
and
pure and will remove almost every type of stain quickly and
easily without risking damage to your carpet or upholstery.
